The one-question test

Stand at the bottom of your stairs and look up. Can you see the top landing in one unbroken straight line? If yes — no turns, no landings, no fan-shaped steps — you need a straight stairlift. If your stairs turn at all, have a flat landing in the middle, or curve, you need a curved stairlift. That is genuinely the whole test. Everything else on this page is detail.

Straight stairlifts: the fast, simple option

A straight rail is a standard length of track cut to fit your staircase. Because nothing is custom-built, installation is quick — usually a single visit within days of your assessment. Straight lifts are also the most affordable type, the easiest to rent, and the simplest to remove or relocate later. If your stairs qualify, this is the easy win. Full details on our straight stairlifts page.

Curved stairlifts: custom-built for your stairs

A curved rail is designed and built for your specific staircase — every turn, landing, and angle measured and manufactured to order. That custom work means a longer timeline (typically a few weeks) and a higher price than straight. But the result is a rail that follows your stairs exactly and a ride every bit as smooth. Full details on our curved stairlifts page.

Side-by-side comparison

Timeline: straight installs in days; curved takes weeks for the custom rail build. Price: straight costs less; curved costs more due to custom manufacturing. Rental: straight rents easily; curved rarely rents because the rail cannot transfer to another staircase. Relocation: straight lifts can often move with you; curved rails cannot. Ride quality: equal when properly built and installed. Features: the same chairs, seatbelts, swivel seats, and battery backup on both.

The gray areas

A few staircases sit near the line. A straight flight with two extra-wide fan steps at the very bottom can sometimes take a straight rail with a small modification. A landing that is really just a wide step might not require a full curved rail. This is where the free assessment earns its keep — we measure precisely and will always recommend the simpler option when it genuinely fits. We have talked customers out of curved lifts they did not need, and we will do it again.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a straight stairlift go around a small turn?

No — straight rails only run straight. Even a small turn or landing requires a curved rail. During the assessment we measure exactly and tell you which type your stairs need.

Why do curved stairlifts cost more?

Because the rail is custom-designed and built for your specific staircase — measured, manufactured to order, and assembled on site. Straight rails are standard lengths cut to size, with no custom engineering.

Is the ride bumpier on a curved rail?

Not when the rail is built and installed correctly. A quality curved rail rides smoothly through turns and across landings. If a curved lift jerks or hesitates, that is an installation or maintenance issue, not a fact of curved life.

My stairs are straight but very long. Does that matter?

Long straight runs are fine — the rail is simply cut longer, with additional support brackets along the way. Length alone never requires a curved lift.
