Good news: there is almost nothing you need to do

Stairlift installation is one of the least disruptive home projects there is. No construction, no wall work, no permits in most cases, no days of dust. The rail bolts to your stair treads and the lift plugs into a standard outlet. That said, a little preparation makes installation day smoother — here is what matters.

Clear the staircase

Remove everything from the stairs and the landings at top and bottom: shoes, baskets, decorations, pet beds, the chair that "temporarily" lives on the landing. The installers need the full width of the staircase and clear space at both ends to work and to test the lift's full travel. Clear a path from your front door to the stairs too — rail sections and the chair unit are long and awkward to carry through a cluttered house.

The outlet

The lift's charger plugs into a standard household outlet within reach of the top or bottom of the stairs. If you do not have one nearby, an electrician can add one — it is a small job. Mention outlet placement during your assessment so we can plan the charging point locations; we will tell you exactly where the outlet needs to be.

Stair condition

The rail mounts to your stair treads, so the treads need to be solid. Loose, cracked, or rotted treads should be repaired first — a lift is only as secure as what it bolts to. We check tread condition during the assessment and will flag anything that needs attention. Wobbly handrails are worth fixing too, though the lift does not attach to them; everyone still uses the stairs on foot sometimes, and a solid rail is basic safety.

Headroom and clearance

We measure headroom during the assessment, but be aware of low spots: bulkheads, sloped ceilings over the stairs, light fixtures that hang into the ride path. A rider sits higher than a person walking the stairs, so clearance that is fine on foot can be tight seated. We identify any conflicts and solve them — sometimes by adjusting the ride path, sometimes by suggesting the fixture move.

What about the walls?

Nothing. The rail mounts to the treads, not the walls, so there is no wall preparation, no stud-finding, no patching afterward. If your staircase has a wall on one side, the rail typically mounts on the opposite side or whichever side gives the best ride path — we decide that during measurement based on your specific layout.

On installation day

Plan for the installers to need a few hours with the staircase to themselves. Pets should be secured elsewhere — open doors, strange noises, and long equipment are a bad combination. You do not need to help or hover; when the lift is ready, we will call you over for the training session, where you and your family learn operation, the remote controls, and the simple maintenance habits. Ask every question you have — that is what the session is for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to hire an electrician before installation?

Only if there is no standard outlet within reach of the stairs. The lift just needs a regular household outlet for its charger — no special wiring. We will tell you during the assessment if an outlet needs to be added.

My stairs are carpeted. Is that a problem?

Not at all. The rail brackets mount through the carpet into the treads beneath. You do not need to remove carpet or prepare the surface.

How long will installers be in my home?

A straight stairlift usually takes a few hours. Curved installations take most of a day. Either way, it is a single visit — you are not living in a construction zone.

Should I be home during installation?

Yes, please — at least for the beginning and the end. We need you for initial walkthrough questions and, most importantly, for the training session when the lift is ready. The middle hours you can spend as you like.
